What differentiates us: The Fuel Mix!


ENGIE is growing its activities in sustainable mobility. Let's take a deep dive into the topic via three key questions.

What is the current state of the sustainable mobility market?

As transportation accounts for 24% of global CO2 emissions*, decarbonizing the sector has become critical to addressing climate change. Consequently, the market for sustainable mobility is experiencing significant growth. This market is not only of interest to ENGIE and other players in the energy sector, but also to those in the oil industry, automobile manufacturers, and startups—with varying levels of maturity. In particular, the market for electric vehicles is booming. This momentum is expected to drive a 35% annual increase in demand for electric vehicle charging point installations in Europe and North America by 2030. This represents a noteworthy progression, especially in France and Europe. Hydrogen will also have a key role to play, driven by Europe's ambition to have a hydrogen station every 200 km by 2030**.

Where does ENGIE stand as a player in sustainable mobility? 

Today, ENGIE is involved in numerous aspects of the sustainable mobility value chain. In France, the Group offers a low-carbon fuel mix—green electricity, green hydrogen, biogas—along with their recharging infrastructure solutions, providing a comprehensive offering to accelerate the decarbonization of mobility. 

The fuel mix caters to the needs and profiles of our clients: natural gas for vehicles (NGV) to fuel motor vehicles, and increasingly its renewable version, biogas (BioNGV), particularly for heavy transport and long distances; hydrogen for intensive or heavy mobility; and, under the ENGIE Vianeo brand, electric, dedicated to light vehicles with fast and ultra-fast charging stations, as well as utility and heavy vehicle fleets. 

The goal in France is to densify territorial networks, essential for accelerating the decarbonization of mobility across entire regions. ENGIE is thus following its roadmap and delivering quality service over time, thanks to the availability of our infrastructures, the supply of green energy, and digital customer journey management.

 

What are some of the Group's most notable achievements?

Since 2022, ENGIE has won numerous contracts for electric vehicle charging stations, particularly in France (under the ENGIE Vianeo brand), and in Belgium (a contract for the installation of 2,800 charging stations in Flanders). The Group has also equipped 200 public parking lots in Singapore and numerous communities in California, USA, including cities, schools, and universities, with charging stations, solar energy production, and even energy storage.

This represents more than 15,000 charging points with contracts of up to 20 years.

 

In France, significant electric mobility projects are underway!
  • 1,400 charging points already in service by the end of 2023
  • ENGIE Vianeo is the 3rd leading operator on highways
  • 4,200 charging points deployed in the parking lots of over 340 B&B HOTELS by the end of 2024

 

Regarding hydrogen, ENGIE has implemented numerous projects at the territorial level in France, such as HYGO, Hympulsion, HYPORT, the first European station for the production and distribution of green hydrogen* in an airport zone which was inaugurated at Toulouse-Blagnac airport, and soon to be implemented on the Dijon Metropole Smart EnergHy hydrogen mobility ecosystem.

Finally, concerning natural gas, especially its bio version, the Group continues to invest at a steady pace, with more than 100 refueling stations in operation.

 

ENGIE is convinced that the only way to collectively accelerate towards Net Zero Carbon is through a mix of sustainable fuels.

 

* Since January 1st, 2024, HYPORT purchases 50% of its electricity with Guarantee(s) of Origin from the SHEM hydroelectric dams in the Pyrenees and 50% from renewable sources through the Fanjeaux agrivoltaic farm in Aude (11), operated by ENGIE.
